- Give each student a brown grocery bag, with the blank side facing up. Have them fold the bag in half vertically so they have a middle line. Then they are to make a small horizontal pencil mark in the middle.
- Instruct the students to draw a profile of a face to include a mouth, and a nose at the middle line they drew in step 1
- The students need to draw an eye looking to the side is added at the upper line level. As a pointer tell the students to draw the eye as a triangle with the pupil colored in at the left side.
- The face is completed with the other half of the face looking forward (at the student), adding another eye and a mouth that continues on both sides of the face. The student can choose whether or not he/she wants to add hair, neck & shoulders.
- After the pencil drawing is complete, Now the fun part... have the students color one side of the face one color and then choose a different color for the other side, they will need to press firmly. Show the students how to layer pastels; color with a light colored pastel first then cover it with a dark color- each layer colored on very heavily. Using a toothpick or craft stick the students can scratch off the top layer of pastel to reveal the under layer making an interesting design.
- For the final step ask the students to trace over the pencil lines with black pastel. This is the time to add details such as eyebrows & eyelashes.
