Raymond
Isidore (1900-1964), the artist of these mosaic decorations, had a simple
job as a sweeper at the local cemetery. He bought the house in 1929 and
lived there with his wife and three children. It is located in the city of
Chartres, in northern France.
One
day in 1938, making a walk in the neighborhood, he happened to see some pieces
of broken pottery, that drew his attention and inspired him to make mosaics from broken kitchenware.
The
next twenty years or so, Raymond Isidore would never pause from doing this
creative activity.
The
result has been a completely decorated site: both the exterior and the interior
of the house have been completely covered with mosaics, not just the walls, but
also the furniture, the beds, the stove....
Raymond
Isidore died in 1964, some two days before his 64th birthday. Mrs. Isidore has
gone on living in the house for a number of years.

Laurel Skye was born in 1951 (now 63
years old). She lives in Arcata,
California where she also has a studio that she creates her art and teaches
Mosaic art classes.
She
started 13 years ago when she decided to enter a contest to decorate a toaster
for a coffee shop. When she found
out she won the contest and they the shop wanted her to do some mosaic art on
the wall, it started a spark of excitement in her and she continued to create
her own style of art with mosaic art.
Then she went to Italy to study the art of mosaic and came back with the
passion to teach other how to do mosaic art. She now continues to make her art pieces as well as
teach classes all over the world.

Art Project
Mosaic Birdhouse
Each
student will need:
-1
white birdhouse
-1
paint brush
-1
cup of mod podge (after class is done, make sure all lids are back on cup so
mod podge won't dry out, and this way we don't waste as much)
-1
bowl of tissue paper
Steps
1-have
each student put name on bottom of birdhouse.
2-students
will paint one side of the birdhouse with mod podge.
3-with
mod podge still wet they will stick pieces of tissue paper on till that side is
covered how they want it.
4-repeat
steps 2 and 3 until all surfaces they want to cover are done.
5-let
it dry and they have all made their own mosaic art piece.
I
am not able to store all the birdhouses in the computer room so I will have a couple tubs with some in and
will try to keep it stocked up. If
you go to do the project and don’t have enough houses, they will be in bags
upstairs around the corner at top of stairs.
Let
teachers know it can also be used for a Mothers Day if they want and if done
before May 9th.
This
is the last project for this school year.
Please let us know if you have any questions or problems.
Thank
you again for helping us with this program. Without you all helping there is no way we could do this for
the wonderful McKay kids!
